Sometimes real life is just too boring.

We work boring jobs at boring places, eat boring food, and think boring thoughts. It's so easy to become disinterested in oneself. We have to keep ourselves engaged in our own lives, or else we may never get out of bed. And as Joan Didion said, "we tell ourselves stories in order to live." This is why fiction plays such an important role in all of our lives. It's why all of us are addicted to television and movies, and gain so much pleasure out of it.

Because it gives us a new way to engage with our own lives. By watching fake people do fake things on a fake movie set, we get to feel something about ourselves. We get to engage with new ways of thinking, new modes of communication, and new ideas. How often are you faced with that in real life? Unless you live a high-rolling, high-flying kind of life, then odds are your day-to-day is pretty much the same. You wake up in the same bed in the same house and go to the same kinds of places every day. You think the same thoughts and eat the same kind of food. Any variation in that is greatly appreciated. It's why we love to travel. We love seeing things from a new perspective and finding out that we all have more in common than we have things that are different. We like to try new stuff here, new languages, and meet new people.

But I don't know if you've tried to book a flight recently, but travel is expensive. Not to mention time-consuming. Not all of us have the bandwidth and the bands in our pockets to make our travel dreams come true. Fiction is a lot easier and cheaper. It's why we consume science fiction. It's why we come back to shows like Star Trek, to movies like Star Wars. Because we like to try new things. And then we like to look at memes that are inspired by these movies, shows, and books.
